"Parental mental health in the transition to parenthood: depressive symptoms, parenting stress, and child development – some lessons learned from Longitudinal Studies in a Nordic context"
Prof Vibeke Moe, University of Oslo
Abstract:
In her presentation, Vibeke Moe will focus on parental mental health in the transition to parenthood and discuss findings from several longitudinal studies elucidating the broad array of consequences of adverse childhood experiences and prenatal risk factors found to be associated with later psychological as well as somatic health. She will also present findings from Norwegian prospective, longitudinal studies, both studies of high-risk children born to mothers with substance abuse problems, and the population-based Little in Norway (LiN) study. She will discuss how prenatal risk factors and parents’ adverse childhood experiences may influence later parental mental health such as depressive symptoms and parenting stress and represent a risk for anomalous parenting behavior toward their children. The Little in Norway (LiN) study is an ongoing longitudinal community-based study from early pregnancy on, investigating the transition into parenthood for mothers and fathers, long-term outcomes of pre-and postnatal processes and patterns, and mechanisms of transmission of risk and protective factors for child development.
