"Inequity and Infancy: Actioning a Call for a Lifespan Approach to Mental Health that is Equitable the Youngest Voices in Our Communities"
Dr Chaya Kulkarni, SickKids
Abstract:
One would assume that no matter what color, gender or ethnicity, every baby is seen as a cute baby and every baby would, as a result, receive adoration in relatively similar and equal amounts. But the reality is that even before birth, babies face inequities driven by the very things we may think should create an equal experience – during pregnancy a baby offers a parent, family a community hope and at birth they are very cute lovable waiting and expecting to be revered and loved in their family and community! BUT, we live in a world where color matters – even the shade of color makes a difference. It is a world where postal code not only matters, but may dictate what services a pregnant woman has access to and what services will be available to her baby upon its birth. This session will explore the inequities faced by young children and consider how greater equity to services might be achieved for all infants around the world. While a global solution is perhaps to high a bar, how each of us, in our corner of the world, can increase equity for infants and their families through embracing a commitment to inclusion and a strengthened understanding of diversity will be considered. Does color matter – YES. As we move toward the delivery of services and supports that amplifies collaboration with parents, caregivers and other disciplines in other systems, we may be challenged personally or at a system level to action a commitment to greater equity for all babies. This session will conclude with summary of concrete steps any individual can action in their corner of the world to begin to move closer to a world where every baby, no matter what color, gender, or ethnicity is equally adored and supported to achieve their optimal level of development.
